Code of Ethics

Mission

I am committed to providing an inclusive container of care for the Caregiver: those walking an end-of-life journey with their person(s). I aim to do this through a trauma-informed approach rooted in compassion, curiosity, and cultural awareness. To this end, I am a storykeeper, sharing deep trust with respect for my clients and their journey. As a professional, I promise to abide by an evolving code of ethics to provide respectful, grounded, and compassionate care to those with whom I connect. 

Definition

A Death Coach is a non-therapeutic advocate for those caring for the dying.

Commitment To The Caregiver & Loved Ones

My primary commitment is to the caregiver. I will treat the entire unit of care with dignity and respect. I promise to actively listen and remain present while attending to the emotional needs of my client so that they can attend to their dying person(s).

Purpose

This Code of Ethics is a working guide of standards to define expectations and ensure transparency while I walk with my clients as a Death Coach.

Competence & Integrity

• I will maintain high standards of professional competence and integrity.

• I will represent myself only within my scope of training and practice.

• I will keep myself informed and up to date on developments in the field.

• I am committed to continued education and training to enhance my knowledge.

• I will consult trusted professionals for consultation when needed.

• I will obtain written consent to communicate with other care professionals.

• I will develop and improve my multicultural competence through ongoing training.

Privacy & Confidentiality

• I will inform Clients of the purpose and limitations of confidentiality.

• I will respect and protect the privacy of the caregiver and their loved ones.

• I will protect the confidentiality of the client-coach relationship.

• I will not share or disclose information deemed confidential without written consent unless compelled by law as a mandated reporter.

• If there is reason to believe that the client or others are in immediate, serious danger to themselves or others, any such disclosure shall be made consistent with state and federal laws that pertain to the protection and welfare of the client or others.

• I will strive to disclose information in a way that respects the client and maintains the integrity of the coaching relationship.

• I will notify a client about any breach of confidential information in a timely manner.

Conflicts of Interest

• I will avoid conflicts of interest that might interfere with my role as Death Coach. 

• I will not exploit my relationship with the client or their loved ones for any reason.

• I will not pursue multiple relationships outside the boundaries of the Death Coach relationship with the client or their loved ones.

• If multiple relationships are unavoidable, I will set clear, appropriate, and culturally sensitive boundaries.

• I will only accept social media connections through my business profiles during the working relationship.

Respect

• I will treat all people (and animals) with respect, including but not limited to: clients, caregivers, loved ones, and colleagues.

• I will honor the dignity of every individual involved, their personal opinions, orientation to care, style of interaction with others, the choices they make, as well as their race, religion, sexual orientation, immigration status, lifestyle, and mental or physical ability.

Cultural Sensitivity

• I will respect and support the role of culture in my clients’ lives. 

• I will seek information and education about the client's cultural orientation when I have questions, either by asking them directly or seeking outside support. 

Discrimination

• I will not discriminate against people based on race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, economic status, or other personal characteristics or life circumstances.

• I will not condone discrimination by others who work alongside me.

Fees for Service

• I will provide complete, detailed investment terms in writing before beginning services.

• I will set rates commensurate with the prevailing Death Coaching rates.

• I will not solicit funds separate from the contract for services.

Completion of Services

• I will complete the services as contracted, in accordance with the terms of the agreement.
